Description

This Din Tai Fung-inspired Spicy Wonton Sauce brings the perfect balance of savory, tangy, and spicy flavors, making it the ideal topping for your wontons, dumplings, or even noodles. This rich, flavorful sauce is a must-try for anyone who loves a little heat and umami in their dishes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp chili oil (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, finely grated
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped green onions
  • 1 tbsp Sichuan peppercorns, toasted and ground (optional, for extra numbing spice)
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional for added sweetness)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, chili oil, and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green onions to the sauce mixture and stir to combine.
  3. If using, add the toasted and ground Sichuan peppercorns for a spicy, numbing kick. You can also add hoisin sauce if you prefer a slightly sweeter sauce.
  4. Stir everything together and let the sauce sit for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  5. Serve the sauce over your favorite wontons, dumplings, or noodles. Garnish with additional green onions or chili flakes if desired.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of chili oil depending on your preferred spice level.
  • For a less intense flavor, you can omit the Sichuan peppercorns.
  • Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Feel free to drizzle the sauce on other dishes like stir-fried vegetables or grilled meats for extra flavor.
