Description

This classic Salisbury Steak recipe features tender ground beef patties smothered in a rich, savory gravy. It’s a comforting and hearty meal that’s perfect for family dinners. Serve it with mashed potatoes or rice for a complete meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, but don’t overwork the meat.
  2. Shape the beef mixture into 4-6 oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties to the pan and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. For the gravy, melt the butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly to form a roux.
  5. Gradually add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk continuously until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the patties to soak up the gravy and become tender.
  7. Serve the Salisbury steaks with the gravy poured over the top, along with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can make the patties ahead of time and refrigerate them until ready to cook.
  • For a richer gravy, you can add a splash of heavy cream or sour cream.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, increase the amount of flour slightly or reduce the broth a little while cooking.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
