Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  • Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Cream Butter: In a separate bowl, cream the butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients: Add the buttermilk, vanilla extract, and sour cream to the butter mixture, and mix until combined.
  • Mix Batter: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the vegetable oil.
  • Bake: Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool: Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Prepare Frosting: For the frosting, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
  • Frost Cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost the top of one cake layer, then stack the second layer on top and frost. Repeat with the final layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
