Description
Homemade fortune cookies are a fun, crunchy treat filled with positive messages, predictions, or jokes. These crispy cookies are easy to make and can be personalized with your own fortunes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large egg whites
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp almond extract
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ tsp cornstarch
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp melted unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp water
- Optional: Food coloring (for a fun twist)
- Paper strips for fortunes (cut to about 3 inches long)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Prepare a second baking sheet with parchment paper for shaping the cookies once they are baked.
- Make the Cookie Batter:
- In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites until frothy (but not stiff).
- Add the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, almond extract, melted butter, and water. Mix until smooth.
- Sift in the flour, cornstarch, and salt, and stir until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Optional: Add a few drops of food coloring if you’d like to make colored fortune cookies.
- Shape the Cookies:
- Drop about 1 tablespoon of batter onto the prepared baking sheet. Use the back of a spoon to spread the batter into a thin 3-inch circle (you can do a few at a time, depending on the size of your baking sheet).
- Bake for 7-8 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are golden brown. Keep a close eye on them, as they can burn quickly.
- Form the Fortune Cookies:
- Remove the cookies from the oven and work quickly! They need to be shaped while still warm and pliable.
- Place a fortune strip in the center of each cookie.
- Gently fold the cookie in half, then carefully bend the edges over the rim of a glass or cup to form the signature fortune cookie shape. You may need to press lightly at the edges to seal them.
- Place the finished cookies into a muffin tin or similar container to help them hold their shape as they cool.
- Cool and Serve:
- Let the cookies cool completely at room temperature. Once they are cool and firm, they are ready to serve!
Notes
- If you don’t want to make your own fortunes, you can print out your own predictions or inspirational quotes to use.
- Fortune cookies are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
- If the cookies harden before you can shape them, just pop them back in the oven for a few seconds to soften them up.
