Description

French Onion Ground Beef Casserole is a rich, savory comfort food dish made with seasoned ground beef, caramelized onions, creamy soup, and crispy fried onions. Topped with melty cheese and baked to perfection, it’s a hearty dinner that’s simple to make and big on flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 cups cooked egg noodles (or pasta of choice)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy French fried onions (divided)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté the sliced onions until caramelized and golden, about 10–12 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease if needed.
  4. Stir in cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme. Mix well, then fold in cooked noodles and 1 cup of fried onions.
  5. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Top with shredded cheese and the remaining 1/2 cup of fried onions.
  6. Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, or until bubbly and cheese is melted and slightly golden.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot!

Notes

  • For extra richness, stir in a splash of beef broth or heavy cream to the meat mixture.
  • Swiss, Gruyère, or provolone also work well for a more traditional French onion flavor.
  • You can make this dish ahead—assemble, refrigerate, and bake when ready to serve.
