Description

Indulge in a savory twist on a classic burger with these French Onion Soup Burgers. Juicy beef patties are infused with rich onion flavor and topped with caramelized onions and melted Swiss or Provolone cheese, all served on toasted buns. Perfect for a cozy dinner or a summer BBQ!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 packet (or 46 tbsp) Lipton Onion Soup Mix
  • 2 1/2 tbsp butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • A pinch of thyme
  • 3/4 cup water (as needed)
  • 1 tbsp brandy or sherry (optional, but recommended)
  • 48 oz Swiss or Provolone cheese
  • 4 buns, buttered or oiled for toasting

Instructions

  • Prepare Patties: In a bowl, mix the ground beef with the onion soup mix. Set aside to allow flavors to meld.
  • Caramelize Onions: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and thyme, along with 1/4 cup water. Cover and let simmer for 3-4 minutes until onions are tender. Remove lid and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, adding a splash of water as needed if onions begin to stick. When onions are browned and soft, add brandy or sherry, then remove from heat.
  • Cook Burgers: Form the beef mixture into 4 patties, pressing a small dent in the center of each. Cook in a medium-hot skillet or on the grill for about 3 minutes on the first side. Flip, add a spoonful of caramelized onions and a slice or two of cheese to each patty. Lower heat to medium, cover if needed, and cook 2-4 minutes more until cheese melts and desired doneness is reached.
  • Toast Buns: While burgers cook, brush buns with butter or oil and toast in a hot pan or on the grill until golden.
  • Serve: Place each burger on a toasted bun and serve hot. Enjoy!

Notes

Adding brandy or sherry enhances the flavor of the caramelized onions, making the dish richer.
