Description

Crispy on the outside with a sweet, gooey filling, these fried pies are perfect for a comforting dessert or snack.


Ingredients

  • Filling:
    • 3 cups fresh apples or peaches, peeled and diced
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • Dough:
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
    • 3/4 cup buttermilk (or milk)
  • For Frying:
    • Vegetable oil
    • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Filling: Cook diced fruit with sugars, spices, and lemon juice until softened. Thicken with cornstarch mixture and cool.
  • Make the Dough: Mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter, add buttermilk, and knead until smooth. Roll out and cut into circles.
  • Assemble the Pies: Fill dough circles with cooled filling, fold, and seal edges.
  • Fry the Pies: Fry in hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  • Serve: Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!
