Instructions
- Preheat the Oil:
In a large shallow pot, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat until the temperature reaches 375°F. - Prepare the Batter:
In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and sugar. In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until combined. The batter should be smooth and slightly thick. - Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon for the coating, then transfer to a plate and set aside. - Slice the Apples:
Peel and core the apples, then slice them into 1/4 inch thick rounds. Use a round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut out the center of each apple slice to form rings. - Fry the Apple Rings:
Dip each apple ring into the batter, letting the excess drip off. Carefully place a few apple rings at a time into the hot oil. Fry for about 2 minutes total, flipping halfway through, until both sides are golden brown. - Drain and Coat:
Remove the fried apple rings from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. While they are still warm, dip each apple ring into the cinnamon sugar mixture, coating both sides evenly. - Serve:
