Ingredients
Scale
For the Garlic Butter Steak:
- 2 ribeye or sirloin steaks (8 oz each)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 garlic cloves, smashed
- 2 sprigs fresh thyme (or rosemary)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
For the Creamy Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk for a lighter version)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional, for extra flavor)
- Fresh chives or parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Make the creamy mashed potatoes:
In a large pot, bring the Yukon Gold potatoes to a boil in salted water. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
Add the butter, heavy cream (or milk), minced garlic (if using), salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy, using a potato masher or a hand mixer for a smoother texture.
Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Keep warm. - Prepare the garlic butter steak:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.
Once the skillet is hot, add the steaks and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness (for medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 130°F).
Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside to rest. - Make the garlic butter sauce:
In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter, smashed garlic cloves, and fresh thyme (or rosemary). Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted and the garlic becomes fragrant.
Spoon the garlic butter over the steaks and let them rest for another 5 minutes to absorb the flavors. - Assemble the dish:
Serve each steak with a generous portion of creamy mashed potatoes. Drizzle the garlic butter sauce over the steak and garnish with fresh parsley or chives, if desired. - Serve:
Enjoy this delicious combination of garlic butter steak and creamy mashed potatoes with your favorite side vegetables or a crisp green salad.
Notes
- If you prefer a different cut of steak, flank steak or filet mignon would also work well in this recipe.
- For a lighter mashed potato version, swap the heavy cream for milk and reduce the butter.
- Leftover garlic butter sauce can be used for drizzling over roasted vegetables or pasta.
