Description

This Garlic Chicken Lo Mein is a flavorful and satisfying dish featuring tender chicken, vibrant vegetables, and soft noodles, all tossed in a savory garlic sauce. It’s an easy, homemade version of a classic Chinese takeout favorite that can be made in just 30 minutes!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Lo Mein:

  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (or substitute with spaghetti or other noodles)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium carrot, julienned or thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

For the Garlic Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional for added sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. 1. Cook the Noodles:

    • Cook the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside. Reserve 1/4 cup of the cooking water in case you need to thin the sauce later.

    2. Prepare the Chicken:

    • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
    • Add the sliced chicken to the pan and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is browned and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.

    3. Sauté the Vegetables:

    • In the same pan, add the sliced onion, bell pepper, and carrot. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are tender but still crisp.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

    4. Make the Garlic Sauce:

    • While the vegetables are cooking, in a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), sesame oil, rice vinegar, sugar, ground ginger (if using), and red pepper flakes (if using) until well combined.

    5. Combine the Ingredients:

    • Add the cooked chicken back to the pan with the vegetables.
    • Pour the garlic sauce over the chicken and vegetables, and toss to coat evenly. If the sauce looks too thick, add a little of the reserved noodle water to thin it out to your desired consistency.
    • Add the cooked noodles to the pan and toss everything together until the noodles are well coated with the sauce.

    6. Serve:

    • Garnish with chopped green onions and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious and savory Garlic Chicken Lo Mein!
