Description

This homemade Garlic Flatbread is soft, chewy, and loaded with flavorful garlic. Perfect as a side for curries, soups, or as a delicious snack on its own, this flatbread is easy to make and sure to impress! With a golden, buttery finish and the perfect balance of garlic and herbs, it’s a simple yet flavorful addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced (or more for extra flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • Fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, garlic powder, and olive oil. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough starts to form.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for this step.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a thin circle or oval, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the minced garlic with a tablespoon of olive oil. Brush the garlic oil mixture generously over the top of each flatbread.
  8. Place the rolled-out flatbreads onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and slightly crispy around the edges.
  9. Once out of the oven, brush the flatbreads with more olive oil if desired, and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley or cilantro.
  10. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or alongside a main course.

Notes

  • For an extra garlicky flavor, you can add roasted garlic to the dough or increase the amount of minced garlic in the topping.
  • If you prefer to cook the flatbreads on the stovetop, you can heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook each flatbread for 2-3 minutes on each side.
  • You can store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
