Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for brushing)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced (or more for extra flavor)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
- Fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, garlic powder, and olive oil. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough starts to form.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for this step.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a thin circle or oval, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
- In a small bowl, mix the minced garlic with a tablespoon of olive oil. Brush the garlic oil mixture generously over the top of each flatbread.
- Place the rolled-out flatbreads onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and slightly crispy around the edges.
- Once out of the oven, brush the flatbreads with more olive oil if desired, and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley or cilantro.
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or alongside a main course.
Notes
- For an extra garlicky flavor, you can add roasted garlic to the dough or increase the amount of minced garlic in the topping.
- If you prefer to cook the flatbreads on the stovetop, you can heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook each flatbread for 2-3 minutes on each side.
- You can store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
