Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk or heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  3. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. The dough will be thick.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it to about 1/2-inch thick. Use a donut cutter to cut out donut shapes. Reroll dough scraps as necessary.
  5. In a deep fryer or large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts in batches for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  6. To make the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk (or heavy cream), vanilla extract, and salt in a bowl until smooth.
  7. Dip each warm donut into the glaze, covering it completely. Let the excess glaze drip off before placing the donut on a wire rack to set. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a light and airy texture, make sure not to overwork the dough.
  • If you don’t have a donut cutter, you can use a round cookie cutter and a smaller cutter to create the hole.
  • These donuts are best enjoyed the day they’re made but can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days.
  • If you want to add a twist, try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on top of the glaze for extra flavor!
