Description

A culinary fusion that combines the rich, savory essence of French onion soup with the hearty satisfaction of a gourmet burger. Perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced (use sweet or yellow onions)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth

For the Burger Patties:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Assembly:

  • 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 4 sturdy hamburger buns
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • Additional butter for toasting the buns
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, optional)

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions:
    • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add sliced onions and sugar. Cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Deglaze with beef broth if needed, scraping up browned bits.
  • Prepare the Burger Patties:
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper gently.
    • Divide into 4 equal portions and form into patties, making a slight indentation in the center.
    • Cook on a grill or skillet over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes per side.
  • Assemble the Burgers:
    • (Optional) Mix garlic with softened butter and spread on buns. Toast until golden.
    • Place each patty on a bun, top with caramelized onions and cheese. Optionally sprinkle with thyme.
    • Serve with the other half of the bun.

Notes

  • Caramelizing onions takes time but enhances their sweetness and depth.
  • Avoid pressing down on the patties while cooking to keep them juicy.
