Description

Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce is a comforting dessert made with soft bread, eggs, milk, and sugar, all baked to perfection and served with a rich and creamy vanilla sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups cubed day-old bread (preferably white or brioche)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Fold in the cubed bread and melted butter. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes so the bread can absorb the custard mixture.
  4. Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. While the pudding is baking, prepare the vanilla sauce (instructions below).
  7. Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving, and drizzle with the homemade vanilla sauce.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can stir in raisins, chopped nuts, or other dried fruits before baking.
  • If you prefer a softer bread pudding, add more milk or cream to the custard mixture.
  • The bread pudding can be made a day ahead and reheated in the oven before serving.
