Description

Grilled Naan is a soft, pillowy Indian flatbread with a slight char from the grill. Perfect to accompany any curry or to be enjoyed with dips like hummus or yogurt.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
  • Optional: Chopped cilantro or garlic for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Slowly add warm water to the flour mixture, stirring continuously until a dough begins to form.
  3. Add yogurt, oil, and milk, and continue mixing until the dough is smooth and soft. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
  6. Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough ball into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Place the rolled-out naan onto the grill. Grill for 2-3 minutes on one side until bubbles form and the underside is golden brown with grill marks.
  9. Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side until golden and cooked through.
  10. Remove from the grill and immediately brush with melted butter. Garnish with chopped cilantro or minced garlic if desired.
  11. Serve warm with your favorite curry, dip, or as a side dish.

Notes

  • If you don’t have a grill, you can use a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over high heat to achieve the same effect.
  • For extra flavor, try adding garlic, cheese, or herbs to the dough before rolling it out.
  • You can also make this naan in advance and reheat it on the grill or in the oven.
