Description

A classic comfort food dish featuring juicy hamburger steaks smothered in a savory onion gravy. Perfect served with mashed potatoes or rice!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced onion
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the Patties:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, black pepper, salt, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into thick patties.
  • Cook the Patties and Onions:
    • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook until well browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side. Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook until they are softened and beginning to caramelize.
  • Make the Gravy:
    • Remove the patties and onions from the skillet and keep them warm on a plate. Sprinkle the flour over the remaining drippings in the skillet. Use a fork to stir the flour into the drippings, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  • Add Broth and Simmer:
    • Gradually mix in the beef broth, stirring continuously until the gravy is smooth. Season with 1/2 tsp salt. Simmer and stir over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.
  • Finish Cooking:
    • Reduce the heat to low. Return the patties to the skillet, covering them with the gravy. Cover and simmer for an additional 15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is thick and flavorful.
  • Serve:
    • Serve the hamburger steaks hot, smothered with onion gravy. This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, or a side of vegetables.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can sauté the onions in the pan before adding the patties.
  • Ensure the ground beef is of good quality for the best flavor and texture.
