Description

Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy is a comforting classic dish that features juicy beef patties smothered in a rich and savory onion gravy. This hearty meal is perfect for family dinners and is sure to satisfy your taste buds with its delicious flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt (divided)
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced onion
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth

Instructions

  • Mix the Patties: In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, black pepper, 1 tsp salt, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined. Form the mixture into thick patties.
  • Cook the Patties: Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and sliced onions to the skillet. Cook until the patties are browned on both sides, about 5-7 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and keep warm.
  • Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in the flour, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  • Add the Beef Broth: Gradually add the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Add the remaining 1/2 tsp salt and let the gravy simmer for about 5 minutes, until thickened.
  • Simmer the Patties: Lower the heat and return the cooked patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer for an additional 15 minutes to blend the flavors.
  • Serve: Serve the hamburger steaks hot with the gravy spooned generously over the patties.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine to the gravy.
  • This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
