Description

These Heart Donuts are the perfect sweet treat for Valentine’s Day or any occasion where you want to share love. Soft, fluffy donuts shaped like hearts and coated with a sweet glaze or frosting make a charming and delicious gift.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Donuts:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt

For the Glaze or Frosting:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk (or more for desired consistency)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or heart-shaped decorations for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick spray or lightly oil it. If you don’t have a donut pan, you can also use a muffin pan to make donut holes.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients:
In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, almond extract (if using), and sour cream (or yogurt) until smooth.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick but smooth. Do not overmix, as this can result in dense donuts.
  5. Fill the Donut Pan:
Spoon the batter into the donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full. You can use a piping bag for a cleaner fill, or simply use a spoon.
  6. Bake the Donuts:
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the donuts are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool the Donuts:
Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before glazing.
  8. Prepare the Glaze:
In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Add more milk if you prefer a thinner glaze. If you want to add color, stir in a few drops of red or pink food coloring.
  9. Glaze the Donuts:
Once the donuts are fully cooled, dip the tops of each donut into the glaze. Let the excess glaze drip off, then set the donuts on a wire rack to allow the glaze to set. For extra decoration, top with sprinkles or heart-shaped decorations while the glaze is still wet.
  10. Serve and Enjoy:
Let the glaze harden slightly before serving. These donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Notes

  • If you don’t have a donut pan, you can bake these as muffin-sized heart cakes or use a mini donut maker.
  • To make these donuts extra special, try using a flavored glaze, such as chocolate or strawberry glaze, or dust them with powdered sugar.
