Ingredients
Scale
For the Donuts:
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
- 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
For the Glaze or Frosting:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk (or more for desired consistency)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Red or pink food coloring (optional)
- Sprinkles or heart-shaped decorations for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick spray or lightly oil it. If you don’t have a donut pan, you can also use a muffin pan to make donut holes. - Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (if using). - Combine Wet Ingredients:
In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, almond extract (if using), and sour cream (or yogurt) until smooth. - Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick but smooth. Do not overmix, as this can result in dense donuts. - Fill the Donut Pan:
Spoon the batter into the donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full. You can use a piping bag for a cleaner fill, or simply use a spoon. - Bake the Donuts:
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the donuts are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. - Cool the Donuts:
Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before glazing. - Prepare the Glaze:
In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Add more milk if you prefer a thinner glaze. If you want to add color, stir in a few drops of red or pink food coloring. - Glaze the Donuts:
Once the donuts are fully cooled, dip the tops of each donut into the glaze. Let the excess glaze drip off, then set the donuts on a wire rack to allow the glaze to set. For extra decoration, top with sprinkles or heart-shaped decorations while the glaze is still wet. - Serve and Enjoy:
Let the glaze harden slightly before serving. These donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
Notes
- If you don’t have a donut pan, you can bake these as muffin-sized heart cakes or use a mini donut maker.
- To make these donuts extra special, try using a flavored glaze, such as chocolate or strawberry glaze, or dust them with powdered sugar.
