Ingredients
Scale
For the cookies:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp almond extract (optional)
- Red and pink sprinkles (for decoration)
For the glaze:
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1–2 tbsp milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- Pink food coloring (or red, for a deeper color)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
- Prepare the dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Make the cookie dough: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and beat until combined.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms. It will be soft and slightly sticky.
- Roll out the dough: Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cookies.
- Bake: Place the heart-shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Let the cookies cool on the sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the glaze: In a bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, melted butter, milk, vanilla extract, and a few drops of pink food coloring until smooth and thickened to a glaze consistency.
- Decorate the cookies: Once the cookies have cooled completely, spoon or drizzle the glaze over each cookie and spread evenly. Add sprinkles while the glaze is still wet for extra flair.
- Serve: Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving. These cookies make a perfect gift for your loved ones!
Notes
- If you want a thicker glaze, simply add a little more powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency.
- These cookies are very versatile and can be decorated with different colored glazes or sprinkles to suit any occasion.
- Make sure to let the cookies cool completely before glazing to avoid the icing melting into the cookies.
