Description

These Heart-Shaped Red Velvet Waffles are the perfect treat for a special breakfast, brunch, or even a Valentine’s Day celebration! With their rich, velvety texture and subtle cocoa flavor, these waffles are both delicious and fun to serve. Drizzle with syrup, top with whipped cream, or add fresh berries for the ultimate indulgence!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tbsp Cocoa Powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 tbsp Granulated Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tbsp Red Food Coloring
  • 1/4 cup Sour Cream (or plain yogurt)
  • 1 tbsp Milk (or more for adjusting batter consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Waffle Iron:
    • Preheat your heart-shaped waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Make the Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Combine the Wet Ingredients:
    • In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, red food coloring, and sour cream until well combined.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. If the batter seems too thick, add a tablespoon of milk to reach your desired consistency.
  5. Cook the Waffles:
    • Lightly grease the waffle iron with non-stick spray or brush it with a little oil.
    • Pour the batter onto the waffle iron, using a little less than a cup of batter per waffle (depending on the size of your waffle iron). Close the lid and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions until the waffles are golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Serve:
    • Carefully remove the waffles from the waffle iron. Serve immediately with toppings of your choice, such as syrup, whipped cream, fresh berries, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Be sure to use liquid food coloring, as gel food coloring may cause the batter to thicken too much.
  • You can make these waffles ahead of time and freeze them for later. Simply let them cool completely, then store in a freezer bag. Reheat in the toaster when ready to serve.
  • For an extra special touch, top with cream cheese frosting instead of syrup to mimic the flavors of classic red velvet cake.
