Ingredients
Scale
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (low-sodium if preferred)
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp sugar (or honey for a more natural sweetener)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 1/4 cup water (for thickening)
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (adjust for desired heat)
- 1/4 cup chicken or vegetable broth (optional, for more volume)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
- Stir well to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
- Once the sauce is simmering, stir in the cornstarch-water mixture. Continue stirring for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- If you prefer a thinner sauce, you can add the optional chicken or vegetable broth.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning. If you want more sweetness, add a little extra sugar; for more heat, add more red pepper flakes.
- Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- This sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1-2 weeks.
- For a richer flavor, you can add a dash of Chinese rice wine or sherry.
- This sauce works great with crispy chicken or tofu and stir-fried vegetables.
