Ingredients

  • 1 lb. cheddar cheese (sharp or mild, depending on preference), grated
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the grated cheddar cheese, heavy cream, butter, and milk.
  2. Heat over low to medium heat, stirring frequently until the cheese is fully melted.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold milk to make a slurry.
  4. Add the cornstarch mixture to the cheese mixture, stirring constantly until the cheese sauce thickens and becomes smooth.
  5. Season with salt, garlic powder, and onion powder to taste. Stir well.
  6. Once the mixture is fully combined and thickened, remove from heat.
  7. Pour the homemade Velveeta into a dish and allow it to cool slightly before serving or storing. It will firm up as it cools.

Notes

  • This homemade version does not contain the preservatives found in store-bought Velveeta.
  • You can store leftover cheese in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend the mixture in a food processor after cooking.
