Description
Homestyle Apple Pie Bread is a warm, comforting bread that combines the flavors of a traditional apple pie with the softness of a homemade loaf. Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a cozy snack, this bread is filled with cinnamon-spiced apples and topped with a sweet, crumbly streusel.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 1/2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and diced (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- For the streusel topping: 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- In a large bowl, beat together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and butter until creamy and light. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the diced apples and chopped nuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- For the streusel topping, mix together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl. Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it into the mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the top of the batter.
- Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For an extra touch of flavor, drizzle the cooled bread with a simple glaze made of powdered sugar and milk.
- This bread can be stored at room temperature for 2-3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Feel free to substitute other apples or add raisins for a twist on the classic recipe.
