Description

Homestyle Apple Pie Bread is a warm, comforting bread that combines the flavors of a traditional apple pie with the softness of a homemade loaf. Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a cozy snack, this bread is filled with cinnamon-spiced apples and topped with a sweet, crumbly streusel.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and diced (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • For the streusel topping: 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and butter until creamy and light. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
  5. Fold in the diced apples and chopped nuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  6. For the streusel topping, mix together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl. Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it into the mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the top of the batter.
  8. Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For an extra touch of flavor, drizzle the cooled bread with a simple glaze made of powdered sugar and milk.
  • This bread can be stored at room temperature for 2-3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Feel free to substitute other apples or add raisins for a twist on the classic recipe.
