This indulgent Hot Cross Bun, Butterscotch & Dark Chocolate Trifle combines the flavors of rich butterscotch, dark chocolate custard, and soft hot cross buns for a dessert that’s perfect for any occasion. A layered delight that will impress your guests and satisfy your sweet tooth!

Ingredients

Scale
  • Hot Cross Buns: Pack of 4 (salted caramel ones recommended)
  • Double Cream: 600ml
  • Chocolate Chips: For sprinkling
  • Butterscotch Sauce:
    • 120ml double cream
    • 200g brown sugar
    • 80g butter
    • Pinch of sea salt
  • Dark Chocolate Custard:
    • 900g custard
    • 200g dark chocolate

Instructions

  • Prepare Trifle Dish: Slice hot cross buns in half and place in the bottom of a trifle dish. Press up the sides for visibility.
  • Make Butterscotch Sauce: In a saucepan on low heat, combine brown sugar, double cream, sea salt, and butter. Mix until melted. Simmer for 3-4 minutes to thicken. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  • Make Dark Chocolate Custard: Place custard in a saucepan on medium heat and let it bubble. Add dark chocolate and mix until melted. Set aside to cool.
  • Whip Double Cream: Using a mixer, whip double cream until it starts to thicken and create peaks.
  • Assemble Trifle: Pour butterscotch sauce over hot cross buns, reserving some for the top. Spoon dark chocolate custard on top. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. Top with whipped double cream and, optionally, half a hot cross bun for decoration and a drizzle of butterscotch sauce.

Notes

  • Allow the trifle to chill for at least one hour before serving for the best flavor and texture.
  • You can prepare the butterscotch sauce and dark chocolate custard a day in advance.
