Description
Indian Cheese Twists are a flavorful, savory pastry snack that combines the richness of cheese with the bold spices of Indian cuisine. Wrapped in a flaky pastry, these twists are crispy, cheesy, and packed with aromatic flavors like cumin, coriander, and garam masala.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup crumbled paneer (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/4 tsp chili powder (adjust for spiciness)
- Salt, to taste
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry into 1-inch wide strips, depending on how thick you want the twists.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled paneer (if using), chopped cilantro, cumin, coriander, garam masala, chili powder, and a pinch of salt. Mix until the spices are evenly distributed through the cheese.
- Take one strip of puff pastry and spread a small spoonful of the cheese mixture along its length. Fold the pastry strip in half, pressing gently to seal the sides.
- Twist the folded pastry strip several times to form a spiral shape. Place the twist on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat this process with the remaining strips.
- Brush each twist with the beaten egg to give it a golden finish when baked. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired for added texture and flavor.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the twists are golden brown and puffed up.
- Let the twists cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a side of chutney or yogurt for dipping.
Notes
- You can use any cheese of your choice, but cheddar and paneer pair wonderfully with Indian spices.
- If you don’t have paneer, you can substitute with ricotta cheese or omit it entirely.
- Feel free to experiment with different spices like turmeric or ajwain (carom seeds) for a more complex flavor.
- These twists are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
