Description

Soft and fluffy Japanese-style milk bread sandwiches filled with a light, creamy vanilla custard. These handheld delights are perfect for dessert, tea time, or even a sweet breakfast treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices Japanese milk bread (shokupan) or soft white bread, crusts removed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together egg yolk, sugar, cornstarch, and milk until smooth.
  2. Place over medium heat and stir constantly until the mixture thickens into a smooth custard.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let cool completely.
  4. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gently fold it into the cooled custard.
  5. Place a dollop of the crème filling on one slice of bread, then top with another slice. Press edges gently to seal or use a sandwich cutter.
  6. Optional: Chill the sandwiches for 10–15 minutes for a firmer texture.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought custard or pastry cream to save time.
  • Add fresh fruits like strawberries or kiwi for extra flavor.
  • Keep chilled until ready to serve for the best texture.
