Description
Bake a loaf of soft and flavorful sandwich bread using this classic King Arthur-inspired recipe. With a golden crust and tender crumb, this bread is perfect for sandwiches, toast, and more.
Ingredients
1 cup (240 ml) warm water (about 110°F)
2 tablespoons sugar or honey
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
4 cups (480g) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup (60 ml) vegetable oil or melted butter
1/4 cup (60 ml) milk
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar/honey. Stir until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
- Add the flour, salt, vegetable oil/melted butter, and milk to the yeast mixture.
- Mix until a dough forms and then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- Let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
Notes
The water temperature is crucial for activating the yeast. If it’s too hot, the yeast may be killed, and if it’s too cold, the yeast might not activate.
