Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices white bread (crusts removed)
- 1/2 lb (225g) large shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- Chopped green onions, for garnish
Instructions
- Start by chopping the shrimp into small pieces and placing them in a medium bowl.
- Add the mayonnaise, gochujang, sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic powder, and ginger powder to the shrimp mixture. Stir well until the shrimp is evenly coated and the mixture has a thick paste-like consistency. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can pulse it in a food processor.
- Spread a thin layer of the shrimp mixture onto each slice of bread. Use the back of a spoon to press the mixture evenly.
- Dip each slice of bread (shrimp side down) into the beaten egg, ensuring the shrimp mixture sticks.
- Next, coat the shrimp side with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to make sure the crumbs stick to the shrimp mixture.
- Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the bread slices, shrimp-side down. Fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Flip and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes until crispy and golden.
- Remove the toast from the pan and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Cut each slice into small triangles or squares and arrange on a platter. Garnish with sesame seeds, chopped green onions, and fresh cilantro (optional).
- Serve immediately with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as soy sauce or sweet chili sauce, and enjoy!
Notes
- For extra heat, you can increase the amount of gochujang in the shrimp mixture. Adjust to your spice preference.
- If you don’t have gochujang, you can substitute it with a mix of sriracha and a bit of honey for sweetness.
- This dish is best enjoyed immediately while the toast is still crispy. You can make the shrimp mixture ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to a day.
- For a lighter version, you can bake the shrimp toast at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until crispy, instead of frying it.
