Description

Macaroni Schotel is a savory, comforting dish that combines pasta with a creamy, cheesy filling, often baked to golden perfection. Popular in Dutch-Indonesian cuisine, this casserole is perfect for family gatherings or a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Macaroni (uncooked)
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 medium Onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 lb Ground beef or chicken (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/2 cup Heavy cream
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups Cheddar cheese (grated)
  • 1/2 cup Mozzarella cheese (grated)
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Paprika (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Parsley (chopped, for garnish)
  • 1/4 cup Bread crumbs (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish or casserole dish (about 9×9 inches) with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Cook macaroni: Cook the macaroni according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  3. Prepare the filling: In a pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until softened. If using ground meat, add it to the pan and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  4. Make the sauce: In a large bowl, whisk together milk, heavy cream, eggs, and grated cheeses (cheddar, mozzarella, and parmesan). Add the sautéed mixture (onion, garlic, and meat) and cooked macaroni to the bowl, mixing everything together until well combined.
  5. Assemble the casserole: Pour the macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. If desired, sprinkle breadcrumbs on top for a crispy topping.
  6. Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  7. Cool and serve: Let the Macaroni Schotel cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground chicken, turkey, or leave it out entirely for a vegetarian version.
  • For an extra creamy texture, increase the amount of heavy cream.
  • Add some cooked vegetables like peas or carrots for extra flavor and nutrition.
