Description

These Mighty and Crispy Fried Onion Rings are the perfect snack or side dish for any meal. With a crunchy golden batter and tender onion inside, these onion rings are crispy on the outside and bursting with flavor. They’re easy to make at home and great for serving with burgers, sandwiches, or as a standalone appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for dredging)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions into rings, separating them carefully. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup of flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and buttermilk.
  4. In another bowl, add the panko breadcrumbs and the remaining 1/2 cup of flour for dredging.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then the buttermilk mixture, and finally coat it in the panko breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs gently to ensure they stick well.
  7. Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil in batches. Fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the breadcrumb mixture for a slight kick.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute it with regular milk or make your own by adding 1 tbsp of vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • To keep onion rings crispy, serve them immediately after frying. If needed, you can reheat them in an oven to restore some of the crispiness.
