Made with small onions, flour, seasonings, and breadcrumbs, these mini versions are air-fried to perfection for a golden, crispy texture without the excess oil. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce for a delicious snack or appetizer that everyone will enjoy!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 small onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and cut off the tops. Carefully slice the onions into petals, making sure to leave the root intact.
  • Prepare the Coatings:
    • In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
    • In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
    • In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
  • Coat the Onions:
    • Dip each onion into the flour mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated.
    • Next, dip the onion into the egg mixture, letting any excess drip off.
    • Finally, coat the onion in breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure it sticks.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the Onions: Lightly spray the onions with cooking spray and place them in the air fryer basket. Cook for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve: Once cooked, remove the onions from the air fryer and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Ensure the onions are cut evenly to allow them to cook uniformly.
  • You can adjust the seasonings in the flour mixture to add extra flavor, such as a pinch of cayenne pepper for some heat.
  • If you prefer a spicier version, add a few dashes of hot sauce to the egg mixture.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute it with regular milk and a teaspoon of lemon juice.
  • These mini blooming onions are perfect for a fun appetizer or snack!
