Description

These crispy Mozzarella Onion Rings are a delicious twist on a classic appetizer. Filled with gooey mozzarella and coated in a crunchy breading, they are perfect for dipping in marinara sauce. Ideal for parties, game days, or a fun family snack!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large white onions
  • 8 slices of mozzarella cheese
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 cups of bread crumbs
  • Oil for frying
  • Marinara sauce for dipping

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions:
Peel the onions and slice them into rings about ½ inch thick. Carefully separate the rings.
  • Cheese Preparation:
Slice each mozzarella piece into 4 strips. This makes it easier to stuff inside the rings.
  • Assembly:
Place a smaller onion ring inside a larger one and fill the gap with mozzarella strips. Make sure the cheese fits snugly. Repeat with all the rings, then freeze them for about 1 hour to firm up.
  • Coating:
Set up three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with bread crumbs.
Coat each frozen onion ring first in flour, then dip it into the egg, and finally cover it with bread crumbs. For extra crunch, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating. Freeze the rings again.
  • Frying:
Heat oil in a deep fryer or large, deep skillet over high heat.
Fry the onion rings until they turn golden brown, which should take approximately 1 minute. Be cautious not to overcook them, or the cheese might leak out.
  • Serving:
Place the fried onion rings on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Serve hot with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture.
  • These onion rings can also be baked for a lighter version—just spray with cooking oil before baking.
