Description

These Mozzarella Stuffed Soft Pretzels take comfort food to the next level! Warm, soft pretzel dough wraps around gooey mozzarella cheese, making these a crowd-pleasing snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110-115°F)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese, cut into 2-inch sticks
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is foamy.
  • Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  • Divide and Fill with Cheese: Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a rope, then flatten slightly and place a mozzarella stick in the center. Wrap the dough around the cheese, sealing all edges tightly to ensure no cheese leaks out.
  • Prepare the Baking Soda Bath: In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Slowly add the baking soda (be cautious as it may foam). Using a slotted spoon, gently lower each pretzel into the baking soda bath for 30 seconds. Remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Brush and Bake: Brush each pretzel with beaten egg, then sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Serve: Let cool slightly and enjoy warm for maximum gooeyness!

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding spices or herbs to the dough.
