Description

Muhammara is a bold Middle Eastern dip made from roasted red peppers and toasted walnuts, delivering a rich, tangy, and smoky flavor with vibrant texture. Perfect as a dip, spread, or sauce, this easy-to-make recipe combines sweetness, earthiness, and a gentle kick of heat for a flavorful and nutritious treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 large roasted red peppers (freshly roasted or jarred)
  • 1 cup toasted walnuts
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Roast the Red Peppers: Roast the red peppers until their skins are blistered and charred, either over an open flame or in the oven. Allow them to cool, then peel off the skins to remove any bitterness, ensuring a smooth and smoky base for the dip.
  2. Toast the Walnuts: Using a dry skillet, gently toast the walnuts over medium heat until fragrant and lightly golden, enhancing their rich, earthy flavor.
  3. Blend the Ingredients: In a food processor, combine the roasted red peppers, toasted walnuts, bread crumbs, minced garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, pomegranate molasses, ground cumin, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Process until smooth, adjusting the consistency as desired.
  4. Adjust Taste and Texture: Taste the Muhammara and add more lemon juice for brightness or pomegranate molasses for sweetness if needed. If the dip is too thick, drizzle in additional olive oil until the desired silkiness is achieved.
  5. Serve or Chill: Transfer the Muhammara to a serving bowl. Enjoy immediately or refrigerate for a few hours to allow the flavors to meld beautifully before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh roasted peppers and fresh walnuts for the best flavor.
  • Properly char the peppers to develop authentic smoky depth.
  • Adjust acidity by balancing lemon juice and pomegranate molasses to taste.
  • Control texture by processing more for smoothness or less for chunkier bites.
  • Serve at room temperature to fully enjoy the flavors and texture.
