Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 box (18.25 oz) Nestlé Toll House chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup Nestlé Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk (or more for desired consistency)
  • 1 cup Nestlé Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips

For Garnish (optional):

  • Extra chocolate chips or grated chocolate
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Stir until well combined, following the package instructions.
    • Fold in the 1 cup of chocolate chips and vanilla extract.
    • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 28-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the Frosting:
    • While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting.
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and milk.
    • Stir until smooth and creamy.
    • In a separate bowl, melt the chocolate chips (either in a microwave in 30-second increments or using a double boiler). Let the melted chocolate cool slightly before adding it to the frosting mixture. Stir until well combined.
    • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk to reach your desired consistency.
  • Assemble the Cake:
    • Place one layer of the cooled cake on a serving plate.
    • Spread a generous amount of frosting over the top of the first layer.
    • Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the chocolate frosting.
    • For an extra chocolate touch, sprinkle additional chocolate chips or grated chocolate on top of the cake for garnish.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
    • Allow the cake to set for about 30 minutes to let the frosting firm up slightly before serving. Enjoy every decadent bite!

Notes

  • You can use any type of chocolate cake mix or chocolate chips you prefer, but Nestlé Toll House chocolate chips work perfectly for this rich chocolate cake.
  • For an even more indulgent version, add a layer of ganache between the cake layers.
  • This cake is best enjoyed within 2-3 days for maximum freshness. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
