Ingredients
Scale
For the Bread Pudding:
- 6 cups day-old bread (such as French bread or white bread), cut into cubes
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup raisins or currants (optional)
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
For the Vanilla Sauce:
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Prepare the Bread Pudding: In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined. Stir in the melted butter. Add the cubed bread to the mixture and gently toss to coat. Let the bread soak in the mixture for about 10-15 minutes, allowing it to absorb the liquid.
- Add Raisins (Optional): If you’re using raisins or currants, fold them into the bread mixture.
- Bake the Bread Pudding: Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the pudding is set and golden on top. You can test for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.
- Prepare the Vanilla Sauce: While the bread pudding is baking, make the vanilla sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the heavy cream, sugar, butter, and salt over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the butter is melted and the sauce is smooth. Once it starts to simmer, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Serve: Once the bread pudding is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Drizzle the warm vanilla sauce over each serving.
Notes
- For an extra touch, you can sprinkle a little extra cinnamon or nutmeg on top before serving.
- If you don’t have day-old bread, you can toast fresh bread in the oven to make it a little drier before using.
- For a variation, try adding chopped nuts or a little bourbon to the vanilla sauce for added flavor.
