Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
- In another large bowl, whisk the sugar and eggs until smooth. Add buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
- Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until the dough forms. The dough should be thick but still pliable.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness.
- Using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters, cut out donut shapes from the dough.
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
- Don’t overcrowd the frying pot to maintain the oil temperature.
- For extra flavor, try glazing the donuts with chocolate or vanilla glaze.
