Description

These Old-Fashioned Cake Donuts are soft, fluffy, and full of nostalgic flavor! With a crispy golden exterior and a tender crumb inside, these donuts are perfect for breakfast or a sweet treat any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 2 teaspoons baking powder
  3. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  5. 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  6. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  7. 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  8. 2 large eggs
  9. 1/2 cup buttermilk
  10. 1/4 cup melted butter
  11. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  12. Vegetable oil for frying
  13. Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
  2. In another large bowl, whisk the sugar and eggs until smooth. Add buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  3. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until the dough forms. The dough should be thick but still pliable.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  5. Using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters, cut out donut shapes from the dough.
  6. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Don’t overcrowd the frying pot to maintain the oil temperature.
  • For extra flavor, try glazing the donuts with chocolate or vanilla glaze.
