Description

This Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cream Pie is a rich, velvety dessert topped with a fluffy meringue that’s golden and lightly sweetened. Perfect for nostalgic moments or a classic family gathering!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Filling:

  • 1 pre-baked pie crust
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Meringue:

  • 3 egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  • Prepare Pie Crust:
Bake your pie crust according to package or recipe instructions. Allow it to cool completely.
  • Cook Chocolate Filling:
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine flour, cocoa powder, and sugar. Gradually whisk in the milk, then add egg yolks, vanilla, and butter. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
  • Assemble the Pie:
Pour the chocolate filling into the cooled, pre-baked pie crust and smooth the top with a spatula.
  • Make Meringue:
In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Spread the meringue over the chocolate filling, sealing it to the edges of the crust.
  • Bake the Pie:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown.
  • Cool and Serve:
Allow the pie to cool completely, then refrigerate it until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Make sure to allow the pie to cool completely before refrigerating it for best results.
  • If you prefer a smoother meringue, you can sift the sugar before adding it to the egg whites.
  • If you’re short on time, use a store-bought pie crust to save preparation time.
