Description

This Onion Cottage Cheese Tart combines the richness of cottage cheese with the savory flavors of caramelized onions, all encased in a flaky, buttery crust. Perfect as an appetizer, light lunch, or snack, this tart offers a delicate balance of creamy and savory in every bite!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry or tart dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup cottage cheese
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese (optional, for creaminess)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried thyme)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp honey (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry or tart dough into a circle and fit it into a tart pan or onto a baking sheet. Prick the base with a fork to prevent it from puffing up during baking. Set aside.
  3. Heat the olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes until the onions are soft and caramelized. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh thyme. (If using honey, drizzle it in during the last 5 minutes of cooking for a subtle sweetness.)
  4. In a bowl, combine the cottage cheese, ricotta (if using), and egg. Stir until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Once the onions are caramelized, spread them evenly over the prepared pastry base.
  6. Pour the cottage cheese mixture over the onions, spreading it evenly.
  7. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the filling is set.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives, if desired, and serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • You can add grated cheese like Parmesan or Gruyère to the filling for a richer flavor.
  • This tart can be served as an appetizer or as a light lunch with a side salad.
  • You can substitute the puff pastry with a gluten-free option or a savory shortcrust pastry for a gluten-free version.
