Description

Pan Fried Cod Fish is a simple, quick, and delicious way to enjoy fresh cod. The fish is coated with a light flour mixture, seasoned, and pan-fried until golden and crispy. The result is tender, flaky fish with a satisfying crunch, perfect for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion. Serve with your favorite side dishes for a complete meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cod fillets (about 6 oz each)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter (for frying)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, for serving)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fish: Pat the cod fillets dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture. This will help achieve a crispy crust when frying.
  2. Season the Flour: In a shallow dish or bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  3. Coat the Cod: Dredge each cod fillet in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat both sides evenly. Shake off any excess flour.
  4. Heat the Pan: Heat the olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot and shimmering (but not smoking), it’s ready for the fish.
  5. Fry the Cod: Carefully place the coated cod fillets into the hot pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the fish is golden brown and crispy. Flip the fillets gently using a spatula to avoid breaking them apart.
  6. Check for Doneness: The fish should be cooked through and flake easily with a fork. If needed, cook for an additional minute on each side. The internal temperature of the fish should reach 145°F (63°C).
  7. Serve: Remove the fillets from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Optionally, drizzle with fresh lemon juice and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
  8. Serve the pan-fried cod with your favorite side dishes such as roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or a fresh salad.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, you can use a gluten-free flour blend or cornstarch instead of all-purpose flour.
  • If you prefer a lighter, crispy crust, you can use panko breadcrumbs instead of flour. Just coat the fish in beaten egg before dredging in the breadcrumbs.
  • Serve the fried cod with a side of tartar sauce or a light lemon aioli for added flavor.
