Ingredients
Scale
For the Patty Melt:
- 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 4 slices of rye bread (or your preferred bread)
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese (or American cheese)
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
For the Secret Sauce:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon dill pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Secret Sauce:
- In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Cover and refrigerate while preparing the patty melt.
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat a skillet over medium heat with a tablespoon of butter.
- Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
- Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook the Beef Patties:
- Divide the ground beef into two equal portions and shape them into patties that match the shape of your bread slices.
- Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Assemble the Patty Melts:
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet over medium heat.
- Add a slice of cheese to each piece of bread, followed by a beef patty, some caramelized onions, a dollop of the secret sauce, another slice of cheese, and finally, top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
- Cook the Patty Melts:
- Cook until the bread is golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side, and the cheese is melted.
- Press down lightly with a spatula as you cook to help the cheese melt evenly.
- Serve:
- Slice the patty melts in half and serve hot with any extra secret sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
- For a thicker sauce, add more flour and milk as needed to reach your desired consistency.
- Experiment with different types of cheese or bread for varied flavors.
