Description

A classic Patty Melt featuring juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese, all nestled between crispy rye bread. The sandwich is enhanced with a tangy and creamy secret sauce, making it a delightful comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patty Melt:

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices of rye bread (or your preferred bread)
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese (or American cheese)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

For the Secret Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon dill pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Secret Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    • Cover and refrigerate while preparing the patty melt.
  • Caramelize the Onions:
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a tablespoon of butter.
    • Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
    • Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  • Cook the Beef Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into two equal portions and shape them into patties that match the shape of your bread slices.
    • Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
    • In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
    • Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  • Assemble the Patty Melts:
    • Butter one side of each slice of bread.
    • Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet over medium heat.
    • Add a slice of cheese to each piece of bread, followed by a beef patty, some caramelized onions, a dollop of the secret sauce, another slice of cheese, and finally, top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
  • Cook the Patty Melts:
    • Cook until the bread is golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side, and the cheese is melted.
    • Press down lightly with a spatula as you cook to help the cheese melt evenly.
  • Serve:
    • Slice the patty melts in half and serve hot with any extra secret sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, add more flour and milk as needed to reach your desired consistency.
  • Experiment with different types of cheese or bread for varied flavors.
