Description

Peanut Butter Sweet Potato Chew Sticks are a healthy and delicious dog treat made with sweet potatoes and peanut butter. These chewy sticks are full of flavor and nutrients, making them a great homemade snack for your furry friend!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium sweet potato (about 1 cup mashed)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (unsweetened and unsalted)
  • 1/2 cup oat flour (or regular flour)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric (optional, for color and extra health benefits)
  • Water (as needed to form dough)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Peel and cook the sweet potato until soft, either by boiling, steaming, or microwaving. Once cooked, mash it well and let it cool.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, peanut butter, egg, cinnamon, and turmeric (if using). Stir until the mixture is smooth and combined.
  4. Add the oat flour and whole wheat flour to the mixture, and stir until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour; if it’s too dry, add a small amount of water to achieve a workable dough consistency.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  6. Using a knife or cookie cutter, cut the dough into long sticks or desired shapes. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, spaced evenly apart.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the treats are firm to the touch.
  8. Let the chew sticks cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog.

Notes

  • Store the chew sticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or refrigerate for longer shelf life.
  • Always make sure to use peanut butter that does not contain xylitol, as it is toxic to dogs.
  • These treats can be easily customized by adding other dog-friendly ingredients, such as shredded carrots or apple puree.
