Description
Peanut Butter Sweet Potato Chew Sticks are a healthy and delicious dog treat made with sweet potatoes and peanut butter. These chewy sticks are full of flavor and nutrients, making them a great homemade snack for your furry friend!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium sweet potato (about 1 cup mashed)
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (unsweetened and unsalted)
- 1/2 cup oat flour (or regular flour)
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 egg
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric (optional, for color and extra health benefits)
- Water (as needed to form dough)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Peel and cook the sweet potato until soft, either by boiling, steaming, or microwaving. Once cooked, mash it well and let it cool.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, peanut butter, egg, cinnamon, and turmeric (if using). Stir until the mixture is smooth and combined.
- Add the oat flour and whole wheat flour to the mixture, and stir until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour; if it’s too dry, add a small amount of water to achieve a workable dough consistency.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Using a knife or cookie cutter, cut the dough into long sticks or desired shapes. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, spaced evenly apart.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the treats are firm to the touch.
- Let the chew sticks cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog.
Notes
- Store the chew sticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or refrigerate for longer shelf life.
- Always make sure to use peanut butter that does not contain xylitol, as it is toxic to dogs.
- These treats can be easily customized by adding other dog-friendly ingredients, such as shredded carrots or apple puree.
