Description

This Pear, Apple, Cheddar & Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese Bagel Sandwich is a delightful blend of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors. The crisp, fresh pear and apple pair perfectly with the sharp cheddar and rich caramelized onions, all tucked inside a toasted bagel. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a unique lunch, this sandwich takes your grilled cheese experience to a whole new level!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 bagels (preferably whole wheat, sourdough, or your choice)
  • 1/2 pear, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 apple, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for grilling)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes, until the onions are soft, golden, and caramelized. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the bagels: Slice the bagels in half and toast them lightly to prevent them from getting soggy when grilled.
  3. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread a small amount of butter on the outside of each bagel half. On the inside of each bagel, layer the caramelized onions, thinly sliced pear, apple, and shredded cheddar cheese. Drizzle honey on the pear or apple slices for a sweet contrast to the savory flavors.
  4. Grill the sandwich: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the bagel halves, buttered side down, in the skillet. Press gently with a spatula and cook for 3-5 minutes, until the bagel is golden and the cheese begins to melt. Flip the sandwich and grill the other side for another 2-3 minutes.
  5. Serve: Once the cheese is fully melted and the bagels are golden brown, remove from the skillet. Slice the sandwich in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Feel free to use different varieties of cheese such as brie, goat cheese, or gouda for a different twist.
  • You can add some greens such as arugula or spinach for extra texture and flavor.
  • For a vegan version, use dairy-free cheese and a plant-based butter substitute.
