Description

This Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with Mushrooms is a delicious twist on the classic Philly sandwich, featuring tender strips of beef, sautéed mushrooms, and melted cheese all piled on a soft hoagie roll. The perfect balance of savory flavors makes this sandwich a must-try for any cheese steak lover!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ribeye steak (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion (sliced)
  • 8 oz mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 4 hoagie rolls (or sub rolls)
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting rolls)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
Thinly slice the ribeye steak against the grain. If needed, freeze the steak for about 30 minutes before slicing to make it easier to cut into thin strips. Slice the onion and mushrooms, and mince the garlic.
  2. Cook the Vegetables:
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms, and sauté until softened and caramelized (about 8-10 minutes). Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Season with salt and pepper. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Steak:
In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced steak to the skillet in a single layer (you may need to cook it in batches). Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the steak is browned and cooked through. Season with salt and pepper, and add Worcestershire sauce if desired for extra flavor.
  4. Combine Steak and Vegetables:
Add the sautéed onions and mushrooms back into the skillet with the steak, stirring to combine. Cook for another 2 minutes until everything is heated through and well mixed.
  5. Prepare the Hoagie Rolls:
While the steak and vegetables are cooking, slice the hoagie rolls down the middle. Butter the cut sides of the rolls and toast them in a separate skillet or under the broiler until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Assemble the Sandwiches:
Divide the steak, onions, and mushrooms mixture evenly among the toasted rolls. Top each sandwich with a slice of provolone cheese and let it melt over the hot filling.
  7. Serve:
Serve the Philly cheese steak sandwiches immediately, hot and cheesy. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try adding sautéed bell peppers or a drizzle of hot sauce.
  • If you prefer a different cheese, try using Cheez Whiz (for a more traditional Philly taste), Swiss, or even mozzarella.
  • You can use flank steak or skirt steak as an alternative to ribeye if desired.
