Description
A hearty and creamy sausage gravy, inspired by the Pioneer Woman, makes for the perfect breakfast or brunch dish. Paired with fluffy biscuits, this classic comfort food is a crowd-pleaser!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb breakfast sausage (mild or spicy, based on preference)
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 2–3 cups milk (whole milk works best)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Red pepper flakes, optional
- 1 tsp crushed garlic, optional (for added flavor)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Once the sausage is browned, sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in the milk, stirring constantly, until the gravy begins to thicken (about 5 minutes). You can add more milk to achieve your desired gravy consistency.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste, and add red pepper flakes or garlic, if desired.
- Continue stirring until the gravy reaches a smooth and thick consistency.
- Serve immediately over warm biscuits.
Notes
- You can use ground turkey or chicken sausage for a lighter option.
- If the gravy gets too thick, simply add a bit more milk to reach your preferred consistency.
- For a spicier kick, use spicy sausage or add hot sauce to taste.
