Description

These delicate puff pastry apple roses are a beautiful and delicious dessert, combining the crisp layers of puff pastry with the sweet, caramelized flavor of baked apples. Perfect for special occasions or when you want to impress your guests with a simple yet stunning treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Gala work well)
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought, thawed)
  • 1/4 cup apricot jam or preserves (or you can use honey)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter (melted)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples:
    • Slice the apples in half and remove the cores. Cut the apples into very thin slices (about 1/8 inch thick).
    • Place the apple slices in a microwave-safe bowl and add lemon juice and cinnamon. Toss to coat the apples. Microwave the apple slices on high for 1-2 minutes until they are slightly softened, but still pliable. This will make it easier to shape the roses.
  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
    • Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry into strips about 1.5 inches wide and the length of the sheet (approximately 8-10 inches long).
    • Brush each pastry strip lightly with melted butter.
  3. Assemble the Apple Roses:
    • Lay the apple slices along the top edge of the puff pastry strip, overlapping them slightly to form the “petals” of the rose. The rounded edge of the apples should be facing outwards, while the thinner edges of the slices are tucked under.
    • Fold the bottom edge of the puff pastry up over the bottom of the apples to enclose them.
    • Carefully roll the pastry strip from one end to the other, creating a rose shape.
  4. Baking the Apple Roses:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Place the apple roses in a muffin tin (to help hold their shape), or on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • If desired, brush the top of the pastry with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water) for a golden finish.
    • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and the apples are tender.
  5. Finish and Serve:
    • Once the apple roses are baked, allow them to cool slightly.
    • Warm the apricot jam or preserves in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and brush it over the apples for a glossy finish.
    • Dust the cooled apple roses with powdered sugar, if desired, before serving.

Notes

  • You can also use other jams like raspberry or strawberry for a different glaze flavor.
  • To make them extra fancy, add a few chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) or a sprinkle of brown sugar before baking.
  • If you don’t have a muffin tin, you can bake these on a baking sheet, but be sure to place them close together to help them maintain their rose shape.
