Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices thick-cut brioche or challah bread
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for cooking)
- 1/4 cup cream cheese (softened)
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for cream cheese drizzle)
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream (for cream cheese drizzle)
- Maple syrup or whipped cream (for serving)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, red food coloring, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of butter to grease the surface.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated, and immediately place the bread on the skillet or griddle.
- Cook the French toast for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining bread slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
- In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and heavy cream. Whisk until smooth and drizzleable. If needed, add a little more cream to reach your desired consistency.
- Serve the French toast warm, drizzled with the cream cheese glaze and topped with maple syrup or whipped cream. Garnish with fresh berries if desired.
Notes
- For a dairy-free version, you can substitute the whole milk with almond or oat milk and use dairy-free cream cheese.
- If you don’t have red food coloring, you can use beet juice for a natural alternative, although the color may be less vibrant.
- Top with chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, for added texture and flavor.
