Description

Saffron rice is a fragrant and colorful dish made with basmati rice, infused with aromatic saffron threads, perfect as a side for grilled meats, stews, or curries.


Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups basmati rice (or long-grain white rice)
  • 3 cups water (or chicken/vegetable broth)
  • 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads
  • 2 tablespoons hot water (for steeping the saffron)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped, optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • 4 green cardamom pods (optional)
  • 2 cloves (optional)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Fresh parsley or cilantro (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Steep the saffron in hot water for 5-10 minutes.
  • Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Sauté onion (if using) in butter or olive oil, adding spices if desired.
  • Add rinsed rice to the pot and lightly toast.
  • Pour in water/broth and add salt; bring to a boil.
  • Stir in saffron with its liquid, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  • Fluff the rice and garnish before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, replace water with broth.
  • Dried fruits and nuts can be added for extra texture and taste.
