Description

Sausage Gravy Puff Pie is a rich and hearty breakfast or brunch dish featuring creamy sausage gravy baked inside a golden, flaky puff pastry shell. This easy-to-make comfort food combines classic Southern-style sausage gravy with the elegance and crisp texture of puff pastry, making it perfect for entertaining or a weekend treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/2 lb breakfast sausage
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and crumbled. Do not drain all the fat.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the sausage and cook, stirring, for 1–2 minutes.
  4. Slowly pour in milk while stirring constantly. Cook until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy (about 3–5 minutes). Season with pepper and salt to taste. Let cool slightly.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut into 2 equal rectangles.
  6. Spoon the sausage gravy onto one half of the pastry, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.
  7. Top with the other puff pastry rectangle and press the edges together with a fork to seal.
  8. Beat the egg and brush over the top of the pastry for a golden finish.
  9. Place the puff pie on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  10. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can add shredded cheddar cheese to the sausage gravy for an extra savory kick.
  • This recipe works well as handheld portions if you cut the pastry into smaller rectangles before baking.
  • Make the gravy ahead of time and store it in the fridge for a quick assembly.
