Description

A classic Southern-style sausage gravy made with savory breakfast sausage, creamy milk, and seasoned to perfection, perfect over biscuits.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: pinch of crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook sausage, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned and cooked through (about 8 minutes).
  2. Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
  3. Slowly pour in milk while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  4. Continue to cook and stir until gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes to taste.
  6. Serve hot over warm biscuits or toast.

Notes

  • Use whole milk for the creamiest texture, but 2% milk works as well.
  • For a spicier gravy, add more black pepper or red pepper flakes.
  • If gravy gets too thick, thin with a little extra milk.
  • Can be made ahead and reheated gently on stovetop.
